Keith C. Wheatstone, PhD

Dr. Wheatstone is the President of BWS. Previously, for more than 30 years, he held senior executive management positions with leading environmental testing laboratories, including President & CEO of Eurofins Environment Testing US and Chief Operating Officer of TestAmerica Laboratories, Inc. Previously, he was a senior executive with Severn Trent Laboratories, Inc. (US) and Severn Trent Laboratories Ltd. (UK). Dr. Wheatstone is a chartered chemist (C. Chem.) and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry (FRSC). He is a graduate of The University of Salford, Manchester (MSc, Chemistry and PhD, Chemistry).

Kimothy L. Smith, PhD

Dr. Smith is Chief Scientist of BWS.  Previously, he was Vice President, Pathogen Detection Systems, Nephros, Inc., Chief Veterinarian of the US Department of Homeland Security (DHS), and Chief Scientist, Office of Health Affairs, DHS. Dr. Smith joined DHS as the Chief of Research Programs and Countermeasures in the Science and Technology Directorate in 2005. Prior to DHS, he worked at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL). Dr. Smith is a graduate of Louisiana State University (PhD, Molecular Epidemiology) and Oklahoma State University (BS in Biochemistry and DVM).  

Jennifer L. Clancy, PhD

Dr. Clancy is an Advisor to BWS. She is the Executive Director of the Environmental Science, Policy and Research Institute (ESPRI). Previously, she was the Chief Scientist at Corona Environmental Consulting and Owner of Clancy Environmental Consultants, Inc. In 2014, Dr. Clancy was the recipient of the prestigious American Water Works Association (AWWA) AP Black Research Award for excellence in water supply research. Dr. Clancy is a graduate of Vermont Law School (MS Law, Environmental Law), McGill University (PhD, Microbiology and Immunology) and University of Vermont (MS, Microbiology and Biochemistry).

Joseph O. Falkinham, III, PhD

Dr. Falkinham is an Advisor to BWS. He has been Professor of Microbiology at Virginia Tech where he taught for 45 years and studied Mycobacteria. His research group established the environmental source of the nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) and documented their presence in the buildings and identified the pathways of transmission and infection. Dr. Falkinham has just published the book, “Opportunistic Premise Plumbing Pathogens” in 2023. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society for Public Health and serves on the Editorial Boards of Applied and Environmental Microbiology, the Journal of Clinical Microbiology, Scientific Reports, Applied Microbiology, and the International Journal of Microbiology. Dr. Falkinham earned his BA (Bacteriology) and PhD (Microbiology) degrees from the University of California and served in the USAF Biomedical Sciences Corps. 

Howard A. Shuman, PhD

Dr. Shuman is an Advisor to BWS. He is Professor Emeritus, Columbia University. Previously, he was a Professor of Microbiology at University of Chicago and Professor in the Department of Microbiology & Immunology Columbia University. Dr Shuman has studied Legionella for more than 30 years.  His research group was the first to determine the DNA sequence of Legionella pneumophila, made significant contributions to the identification of the Dot/Icm Type IV secretion system, and completed genome sequences of 38 Legionella species. Dr. Shuman is a Fellow of the American Academy of Microbiology and of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. He has served on the Editorial Boards of mBio, Infection and Immunity, The Journal of Biological Chemistry, and Protist. He is a graduate of Harvard University (PhD) and the University of Massachusetts, Amherst (BS).
