Cooling Towers

Cooling Towers

Cooling towers are evaporative heat rejection systems that use circulating water to remove heat from various processes and to cool buildings, as part of air conditioning. Without proper treatment, the conditions under which cooling towers operate support the growth of bacteria, such as Legionella. Cooling towers can release microscopic droplets called “drift” into the environment. Legionella pneumophila bacteria from cooling towers has been linked to outbreaks of Legionnaires’ disease.

Services

  • We collect water samples for routine Legionella testing from cooling tower systems. We screen the samples by quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) and send qPCR-positive samples to an accredited third-party laboratory for testing by culture methods.
  • We help clients respond timely to a notice from the Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ), typically the State or Local Department of Health, concerning investigations of Legionnaires’ disease and infections by other pathogens associated with building water systems.
  • We collect water samples from cooling tower systems for investigations of Legionnaires’ disease. We screen the samples by qPCR and send qPCR-positive samples to accredited third-party laboratories for testing by approved culture methods.
